An Idyllic Picnic Wine

I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love Italian white wines on an early Autumn day. Carpineto’s Dogajolo Toscano Bianco is the perfect picnic wine, and such a fun and unique blend of Chardonnay, Grechetto and Sauvignon Blanc. The slightly heavier body and mouthfeel on this white wine makes it a great choice for early Fall, when the heat of summer is just starting to cool down.

What makes this such an interesting blend? Chardonnay and Sauvignon are very different varietals; Chardonnay is often rich, round and has a heavier mouthfeel, while Sauvignon Blanc is light, fresh, aromatic and acidic. The addition of the Grechetto really rounds this blend out with rich notes of pear, white flowers and a hint of hazelnut.

You’re probably familiar with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, but what is Grechetto? The Grechetto grape actually has its origins in Greece, but today it’s most commonly grown in Italy and is often used in Italian white blends from Umbria. It’s primarily used as a blending grape and compliments the characteristics of both the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to make a fantastic value white wine.

The result of the blend is a crisp and aromatic wine with notes of pear, grapefruit, honeydew, stone fruit and jasmine. The mouthfeel is slightly heavier with a bit of creaminess and body to it.

For the perfect picnic, pack a bottle of the Dogajolo Toscano Bianco in your basket with a hearty cheese and charcuterie board. I recommend sharp Cheddar Cheese, aged Gouda, Camembert, and Stilton Blue Cheese. Add some Bresaola, Prosciutto, and some rustic Italian bread and you’ve got yourself the perfect picnic to pair with this lovely white wine blend!
