Brunello wine: history and curiosities about the most loved Tuscan red wine in the world

Get ready for an incredible journey into the world of the finest of the red wines: the Brunello di Montalcino. In this article, we will guide you through the history and some curiosities about an incredible product that pleases the palate of many wine enthusiasts since the middle ages.

The "Brunello di Montalcino'' is unquestionably one of the most famous and loved red wines across the globe. Its fame reached an astonishing level, to the point that Montalcino is now probably the most famous "borgo" in the whole peninsula. Both more producers and many more vineyards are regularly seeing the light of day, but always keeping the quality stable and arguably fine like never before.

So what is it that makes a Brunello winery so special? Some of the bottles produced here are among the most expensive wines of all, both in terms of cost and also in terms of "affection". It's not a mystery that this magical product has reached a status symbol level, and owning a good bottle is now a source of pride and satisfaction among collectors, given that it is one of the most renowned Italian wines in the world and bringing it to the table is always an emblem of exclusivity.

Tuscany is arguably the most famous wine region of Italy. A Brunello winery is incredibly lucky, being surrounded by two rivers that enrich the soil, with 15% of the whole municipality of Montalcino is now covered in vineyards. The unique location and the particular geological composition of this terrain is another important factor that makes the grapes that grow here so unique. Another secret is the classic Mediterranean climate, where most of the rain falls in spring and autumn, with a perfect average of 700m per year: basically the perfect amount for a vineyard.

Although the denomination Brunello di Montalcino has been recognized in recent times and, in particular, in 1865, when the first bottle was presented in Italy and abroad, the area dedicated to this production has been famous for its good wine since the Middle Ages, where the most appreciated wine in the area at the time was Moscadello di Montalcino, a sweet and pleasant white. Clemente Santi, pharmacist and viticulture enthusiast, in the mid-nineteenth century, started the production of this incredibly famous red, giving birth to this amazing tradition that we still witness to this day.

In particular, the 1970 is synonymous with a best-selling reserve in world enology. Around 250 wineries produce Brunello, for a production of 6.5 million bottles. Among these, of course, we have the Carpineto one. Not many know that back in 1980 Brunello di Montalcino was the first Italian wine to obtain the DOCG, or the Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin.

Our Brunello is grown at high altitudes where you can glimpse the moss that grows wild at the foot of the rows, which enjoy a cool climate, surrounded by a magnificent panorama. Brunello di Montalcino also benefits from these special conditions, which give it lively, fresh notes with floral overtones.

Ever since it was created, Brunello has always required long aging before release. Especially in the past, when aging in wooden barrels was much longer and made the wines even more exceptional. But how to pair this extraordinary wine with food? Brunello di Montalcino is an excellent wine that lends itself to pairings with structured red meat dishes, especially Florentine steak, or even with excellent cheese boards.

An excellent product from a dream region, tasting a good bottle of Brunello di Montalcino is a must for any wine lover across the globe. It is an unmissable appointment in your lifetime and what better way than doing it in a Brunello winery? Brunello di Montalcino has undoubtedly established itself in the front row of Italian wine, and as a wine lover, you can expect an ever increasing demand for many years to come.
